Vis, Blue Cave & Hvar

Get to know some of the natural highlights of the Croatian islands in the Dalmatian archipelago on a full-day excursion.

This time we’re taking you to viewing the beauty of the Adriatic near the island of Hvar, Vis and Bisevo. Sight-seeing from the sea: the famous Blue Cave, Stanivia beach (island of Vis), Green Cave (isle Ravnik), Blue lagoon (Budikovac), Pakleni islands, and finally the city of Hvar on Hvar island.

Croatian island of Hvar is the perfect destination for tourists seeking the beauty of Mediterranean beaches without the crowds associated with more well-known destinations. Frequently hailed as the “new St-Tropez”, Hvar island is clearly one of Croatia’s top islands. Glamorous Hvar town is the destination of choice, as yachts glide into the stunning harbour disgorging the beautiful, the celebrated, the rich. The streets of Hvar town, lined with newly renovated Venetian townhouses, are a backdrop for visitors from all walks of life. From honeymooners to backpackers to yachties to retirees, everyone wants to see what the fuss is about. Hvar is the longest island in the Adriatic–about 68km. Its western third is about 10 kilometres while the reminder, towards the east is very narrow–2.4km. The total area is 300 square kilometres. Stretching along the entire island, close to the south coast,is the island’s crest which reaches its highest point at the peak of St Nikola (626m).

The Blue Grotto or Blue Cave (CroatianModra špilja), is a water-logged sea cave located in a small bay called Balun, on the east side of the island of Biševo and about 4.5 nautical miles (8.3 km) from Komiža, in the Croatian Adriatic. It is situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, 5 km south-west of the island of Vis. The grotto is one of the best known natural beauty spots on the Adriatic and a popular show cave because of the glowing blue light that appears at certain times of day. Depending on the season, the ideal moment to visit the cave is between 11 AM and 12 noon.

Green cave on island of Ravnik – big sea cave with a hole on the top where light shines, spreading sparkling green light. Since it is permitted to swim inside of the Green Cave, as opposed to the Blue Cave of Bisevo, you are encouraged to jump of the speedboat and experience the feeling of swimming inside of the cave. It is a special and a bit frightening feeling which only ads to the excitement of the experience. We also offer snorkelling masks on our speedboat (regular and EasyBreath snorkelling masks) which will give you unique opportunity to enjoy in the beam of light emanating from the cave ceiling and shining inside of the water in a narrow cone. With its silver sparkle the light beam truly is an amazing site for snorkellers. After we have enjoyed in Green Cave it is time to continue on our Blue Cave and Hvar tour as we continue towards turquoise lagoon of Budikovac island.

Another lagoon which we visit on our speedboat tour from Split, besides the Blue Lagoon of Drvenik and Krknjasi islands, is the lagoon of distant Budikovac island. Even though we like to call them “blue lagoons”, the color of the sea inside the Budikovac lagoon is closer to beautiful turquoise, constantly changing shades as the sun moves on the horizon above.Budikovac island is situated on the SE side of the island Vis and its lagoon is formed by Budikovac island and two little islands called “small Budikovac” and “Sanak” located just outside the main beach of island Budikovac. Its crystal clear sea is the perfect stage for some underwater photography and selfies to share with your friends.

The Pakleni Islands, the emerald jewels opposite Hvar Town, are a major attraction for sailors, beach and nature lovers. Often mistakenly called Hell’s Islands, the name Pakleni is taking from a type of resin used in ship building. While they may all look fairly similar from the air, there is incredible diversity – a quick overview of the most interesting islands.
